Lectures and Consultations for the 2014 Cruise
Keynote Lecture: Shift Easy - the Psychology of Joyful and Sustainable Diet Improvement
On this cruise, it’s easy to eat a whole-foods plant-based diet. Once we return to the “real world,” things get a lot more challenging. The multi-billion dollar food industry markets junk food and animal products at every turn. Well-meaning friends and family worry about where we get our protein. Our own cravings can hijack the best of intentions. And social gatherings are a constant challenge.
Join marketing consultant, coach, and contributing author to Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition, Howard Jacobson, as he shares ways of inoculating ourselves against the marketing, social pressure, and internal chatter that can derail our best intentions.
Lecture: The Fit Family - Strategies for Transition without Tyranny or Revolution
After Howard Jacobson discovered a vegan diet, he met with considerable resistance as he tried to impose his “diet religion” on his wife and two young children. Navigating between uncompromising rules “for their own good” and “leading by example,” he slowly and painstakingly discovered strategies for guiding his family to healthier ways of eating that didn’t involve tears or anger.
In this talk, Howard is joined by his 18-year-old daughter Yael, who was 7 when the tofu hit the fan. Yael, now a health-conscious vegan mostly-raw-foodist, and her father present practical strategies for parents to have the greatest impact on their children’s health without compromising the love, respect, and joy that are key to good relationships.
Lecture: Food as Freedom
In Whole, T. Colin Campbell and Howard Jacobson document the distortions perpetrated by the medical and pharmaceutical industries, the media, government and educational institutions. But the lies aren’t confined to diet and health. We live in a society that encourages us to be obedient consumers. We are sold junk food, distracted by junk entertainment, and pacified by junk news.
Do you have the urge to unplug from the bleak “consumer” society, and rejoin the joyful natural world? Food is THE most powerful and immediate way to do this. Howard will show you how to break free of the industrial food system by growing your own, supporting local farmers and regaining the skills of home cooking.
