Yoga Cruise

Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University, is the author of the best-selling book, The China Study and Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition. With more than 70 grant-years of peer-reviewed research funding (mostly NIH), he has authored over 300 research papers on diet, nutrition and health derived from laboratory-based experimental research and large-scale human studies in China and the Philippines.

Dr. Michael Greger is a founding member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, a physician, author and internationally-recognized speaker on nutrition, food safety and public health issues. He has lectured at the Conference on World Affairs, testified before Congress, appeared on The Dr. Oz Show and The Colbert Report, and was invited as an expert witness in the defense of Oprah Winfrey in the infamous “meat defamation” trial.

Rip was a three-time All-American swimmer at the University of Texas at Austin and spent a decade as a world-class triathlete. Dr. Neal Barnard is the president and founder of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. His research has been cited by the American Diabetes Association and the American Dietetic Association in official policy statements on healthful diets.

Ingrid Newkirk is the president and founder of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)—the largest animal rights organization in the world, with more than 5 million members and supporters and PETA affiliates in a dozen countries. She is the subject of the HBO documentary I Am an Animal and has written more than a dozen books, including Making Kind ChoicesOne Can Make a Difference, and her vacation-reading, non-fiction novel about daring raids to get animals out of laboratories and factory farms, Free the Animals!

Dr. Michael Klaper is an acclaimed physician and health educator, known for his illuminating and humorous presentations on reversing disease and enhancing health through better nutrition. A long-time radio host and author, Dr. Klaper currently practices nutritionally-based medicine at True North Health Center in California. His talent for presenting complex medical topics in a simple, enjoyable format has made him a sought-after speaker at health conferences across the country as well as internationally.

Dr. Joel Kahn has been plant-based for 40 years and is known as "America's Healthy Heart Doc." He has expertise in both interventional and preventive therapies emphasizing lifestyle changes. He combines his university professorship with his love of patients, making his presentations sought after coast to coast. He is the author of three books, including The Whole Heart Solution.

Dr. Jonathan Balcombe is a biologist and author whose work as an animal advocate has gained him a sizeable following. Balcombe studies animal behavior, and shares his insights in books such as What a Fish Knows, and The Exultant Ark: A Pictorial Tour of Animal Pleasure. In his lectures aboard Holistic Holiday at Sea, Balcombe will combine science and story-telling for a surprising and enlightening look at the inner lives of animals.

Gene Baur is cofounder and president of Farm Sanctuary, and has been hailed as "the conscience of the food movement" by TIME Magazine. He was a pioneer in undercover investigations and instrumental in passing the first U.S. laws to ban inhumane factory farming practices. He has traveled extensively, campaigning to raise awareness about the abuses of animal agriculture.

Dr. Lawrence Kushi is an internationally-known nutritional and cancer epidemiologist. He has served on advisory committees for the National Institutes of Health, the American Institute for Cancer Research, the World Cancer Research Fund and other organizations. He chaired the American Cancer Society’s 2012 committee on nutrition and physical activity guidelines for cancer prevention. He leads the Cancer Research Network, funded by the National Cancer Institute to catalyze research in integrated health care settings.

Julieanna Hever is a Registered Dietitian in private practice based in Los Angeles. Julieanna authored the Permanente Journal’s A Physician’s Guide to Plant-Based Diets, The Vegiterranean Diet and the best-selling book, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Plant-Based Nutrition. She is the host of the wellness talk show series What Would Julieanna Do? on Z Living network, has given a TEDx talk, and is the nutrition columnist for VegNews magazine. She is the co-author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Gluten-Free Vegan Cooking and a recipe contributor to both New York Times bestselling Forks Over Knives books. Julieanna has been featured on the Dr. Oz Show, the Steve Harvey Show, Reluctantly Healthy, Marie Osmond’s talk show, Jane Velez-Mitchell, and E! News, co-stars on The Chef and The Dietitian, and lectures extensively throughout the world.

Ethical Veganism and the Rights of Animals

This cruise we will be placing a special focus on a more compassionate and ethical view of our relationship to the animal kingdom. Ingrid Newkirk, president and founder of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the world’s largest animal rights organization, will be our keynote speaker on the topic. Newkirk will be joined by well-known animal rights advocates Gene Baur, cofounder and president of Farm Sanctuary, and Dr. Jonathan Balcombe, who will present an enlightening look at the inner lives of animals.

Integrative Medicine & Mind-Body Medicine

Integrative medicine is a natural complement to holistic healing, the annual theme of our cruise. Many of our teaching staff are from the medical profession, including Dr. David Blyweiss, Dr. Michael Finkelstein, Dr. Ron Weiss, Dr. Robert Schwartz and others. They view the healing process in a holistic way that targets the cause rather than solely the symptoms. Learn how to aid your body's natural self-healing process while you have a relaxing vacation with hundreds of like-minded fellow travelers.


Integrative Nutrition: The importance of integrative nutrition will also be discussed by the widely respected Dr. Michael Greger, a founding member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Dr. Greger's expertise has been called upon by Congress, the Conference on World Affairs, the Dr. Oz Show, and he witnessed for Oprah Winfrey in the "meat defamation" trial.

Macrobiotics: This year's program includes interesting and stimulating workshops and lectures by senior macrobiotic teachers, including Warren Kramer, former faculty member of the Kushi Institute, the Strengthening Health Institute and the New England School of Acupuncture, and one of the country’s most informative macrobiotic speakers. Get ready to have your funny bone tickled by the sometimes outrageous and always entertaining macrobiotic teacher and comedian Jessica Porter. Jessica is the author of The MILF Diet and The Hip Chick's Guide to Macrobiotics. She also collaborated with Alicia Silverstone on the New York Times number one bestseller, The Kind Diet. Also presenting are long-time macrobiotic teacher, counselor and shiatsu practitioner, Bob Carr and Lino Stanchich, a macrobiotic authority for over 40 years and one of the country’s most experienced Do-In practitioners.

Yoga & Mindfulness Practice

Daily yoga sessions will be available with senior teacher at the Amrit Yoga Institute, Chandrakant Hiester. Angelica Kushi, who has lived holistically her entire life, will lead beginner and intermediate vinyasa and heart-opening yoga classes. We are thrilled to be bringing back 36 year vegan Alese Jones, who has over 25 years of experience in several disciplines of yoga, meditation and dance. Additionally, Bianka Steinfeldt will lead Pilates and stretching classes. Bianka has a highly disciplined approach drawn from her many years of experience.

Integrative Relaxation: If you want to experience the benefits of deep rest and relaxation, join Chandrakant Hiester for this journey of emotional release. Integrative Relaxation is a simple, practical tool that offers profound emotional and physical benefits, and is very easy to do by yourself or with others in the comfort of your home.

Spiritual Practices: Daily morning and afternoon meditation practice is offered from a variety of traditions such as Zen, Vedic and yogic. Dr. Sharon Gutterman teaches Mindful Meditation and The User's Guide to Living Mindfully; she trained in an intensive mindfulness-based stress reduction program taught by doctors Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli. Classes in Qi Gong, a 3000-year old practice with benefits like stress reduction, is led by instructor Marcus Gary, who balances fun and grounding. We are excited to introduce Robin Queen Finkelstein, a Slow Medicine Therapist, certified psycho-spiritual counselor, ordained minister and green living specialist, as well as the founder of Transformational Touch healing modality. Robin will be offering therapy and a relationship workshop.

Cooking Classes

Learn how to get started and keep it interesting with beginner and advanced vegan cooking classes taught by some of this country's most celebrated and accomplished cooking teachers, such as Julieanna Hever, a Registered Dietitian who has authored Vegiterranean Diet and the best-selling book, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Plant-Based Nutrition. Julieanna has been featured on The Dr. Oz Show, The Steve Harvey Show, Reluctantly Healthy, The Marie Osmond Show, The Jane Velez-Mitchell Show, and E! News, co-stars on The Chef and the Dietitian, and lectures extensively throughout the world. Kim Campbell is the author of The PlantPure Nation Cookbook and The PlantPure Kitchen. Kim is also the Director of Culinary Education at PlantPure, Inc., where she works with her husband, Nelson, promoting a whole foods, plant-based diet. Jessica Porter is an exciting and interesting teacher/author, but much more she is the funniest lady I know and has a way of transmitting important life enhancing wisdom with a humor that is truly uplifting.

Fitness with Robert Cheeke and Marcus Gary

A variety of classes are offered several times a day, so you can maintain your active lifestyle while on the sea. Want to push your exercise regime to the next level? Build your strength with two-time natural bodybuilding champion Robert Cheeke or strength trainers and personal fitness experts Giacomo Marchese and Dani Taylor, or take a class with Matt Frazier, a vegan runner who founded the popular blog No Meat Athlete. For those with specific needs, Larry Krug instructs a weight training class for cancer recovery. Also, the gym (Aurea Fitness Center), which is located within the Aurea Spa on deck 14, is free of charge.
