Holistic Holiday at Sea™ is the largest, most comprehensive health and wellness program ever to be staged on a ship at sea. We consider our event a "Voyage to Well-being" and a wonderful, relaxing vacation experience. With over 45 teachers and 145 classes, our next cruise will be our best ever. Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn is a ground-breaking pioneer in preventive and restorative cardio-vascular medicine. Part of his fame stems from being former president Bill Clinton's physician, significantly improving Clinton's health with a plant-based diet. His pioneering research is summarized in his best-selling book Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease; he was featured in the popular plant-based diet documentary Forks over Knives and also appeared in the CNN special, "The Last Heart Attack".
Dr. Joel Kahn has been plant-based for 40 years and is known as "America's Healthy Heart Doc." He has expertise in both interventional and preventive therapies emphasizing lifestyle changes. He combines his university professorship with his love of patients, making his presentations sought after coast to coast. He is the author of three books, including The Whole Heart Solution.
Jonathan Balcombe is a biologist and author whose work as an animal advocate has gained him a sizeable following. Balcombe studies animal behavior, and shares his insights in books such as What A Fish Knows, and The Exultant Ark: A Pictorial Tour of Animal Pleasure. In his lectures aboard Holistic Holiday at Sea, Balcombe will combine science and story-telling for a surprising and enlightening look at the inner lives of animals.
Gene Baur is co‑founder and president of Farm Sanctuary, and has been hailed as "the conscience of the food movement" by TIME Magazine. He was a pioneer in undercover investigations and instrumental in passing the first U.S. laws to ban inhumane factory farming practices. He has traveled extensively, campaigning to raise awareness about the abuses of animal agriculture.
Dr. Michael Klaper is an acclaimed physician and health educator, known for his illuminating and humorous presentations on reversing disease and enhancing health through better nutrition. A long-time radio host and author, Dr. Klaper currently practices nutritionally-based medicine at True North Health Center in California. His talent for presenting complex medical topics in a simple, enjoyable format have made him a sought-after speaker at health conferences across the country as well as internationally
Benefits of a Vegan Lifestyle
We are excited to welcome back research scientist Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University and author of the best-selling book, The China Study and Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition. Presently, Dr. Campbell holds an Honorary Professorship at the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine and is on the Board of Directors of the Chinese Institute of Nutritional Sciences, the government's leading institution responsible for nutrition research and policy in China.
Dr. Michael Greger is a founding member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, a physician, author, and internationally-recognized speaker on nutrition, food safety, and public health issues. He has lectured at the Conference on World Affairs, testified before Congress, appeared on The Dr. Oz Show and The Colbert Report, and was invited as an expert witness in the defense of Oprah Winfrey in the infamous “meat defamation” trial.
Holistic Holiday at Sea™ has invited back one of the world's most important and knowledgeable vegan advocates, Neal Barnard, M.D., president and founder of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. He is the editor-in-chief of the Nutrition Guide for Clinicians and the author of more than 15 books on nutrition and health for lay readers. His research has been cited by the American Diabetes Association and the American Dietetic Association in official policy statements on healthful diets.
Integrative Medicine & Mind-Body Medicine
Integrative medicine is a natural complement to holistic healing, the annual theme of our cruise. Many of our teaching staff from the medical profession, such as Dr. David Blyweiss, view the healing process in a holistic way that targets the cause rather than solely the symptoms. Learn how to aid your body's natural self-healing process while you have a relaxing vacation with hundreds of like-minded fellow travelers. At the intersection of Western and alternative medicine is complementary medicine, represented on this cruise by Dr. Janet Konefal. Dr. Konefal is the director of iCamp (Integrative and Complementary Academic Medicine) at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and incorporates mind-body techniques into her practice. Drs. Ora and Issac Prilleltensky will be presenting jointly on research-backed strategies for creating healthy change.
Integrative Nutrition: The importance of integrative nutrition will be also be discussed by the widely respected Dr. Michael Greger, a founding member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Dr. Greger's expertise has been called upon by Congress, the Conference on World Affairs, the Dr. Oz Show, and he witnessed for Oprah Winfrey in the "meat defamation" trial.
Macrobiotics: This year's program includes interesting and stimulating workshops and lectures by several senior macrobiotic teachers, including Warren Kramer, faculty member of the Kushi Institute, the Strengthening Health Institute and the New England School of Acupuncture, and Susan Krieger, a senior macrobiotic counselor and educator of over 30 years. Also presenting is Lino Stanchich, a macrobiotic authority for over 30 years and Do-In practitioner.
Yoga & Mindfulness Practice
Daily yoga, meditation, and yoga nidra sessions will be available with senior teacher at the Amrit Yoga Institute Chandrakant Hiester. Angelica Kushi, who has lived holistically her entire life, will lead basic, vinyasa and heart-opening yoga classes. Additionally, Bianka Steinfeldt will lead beginner and intermediate yoga classes.
Integrative Relaxation: If you want to experience the benefits of deep rest and relaxation, join Chandrakant Hiester for this journey of emotional release. Integrative Relaxation is a simple, practical tool that offers profound emotional and physical benefits, but is very easy to do by yourself or with others in the comfort of your home.
Spiritual Practices: Daily morning and afternoon meditation practice is offered from a variety of traditions such as Zen, Vedic and yogic. Sharon Gutterman teaches The User's Guide to Living Mindfully; she trained in an intensive mindfulness-based stress reduction program taught by doctors Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli. Classes in Qi Gong, a 3000-year old practice with benefits like stress reduction, is led by instructor Marcus Gary, who balances fun and grounding.
Learn how to get started and keep it interesting with beginner and advanced vegan cooking classes taught by some of this country's most celebrated and accomplished cooking teachers, such as Christina Pirello, popular television host and author of six bestselling, award-winning cookbooks. Creator of the popular vegan blog HappyHealthyLife.com, Kathy Patalsky's infectious enthusiam for delicious healthy food has made her an icon in the vegan blogosphere. Jane Esselstyn, RN is a fresh and charismatic plant-based voice. She brings her perspective and passion as a woman, nurse, researcher and mother to creating on-ramps to the plant-based way of life. Jane is an avid and inventive designer of plant-based recipes and the co-author of The Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease Cookbook. Jane Esselstyn will be joined by her mother, Ann Esselstyn, in a joint cooking class. Jessica Porter is an exciting and interesting teacher/author, but much more she is the funniest lady I know and has a way of transmitting important life enhancing wisdom with a humor that is truly uplifting. Nancy Montuori has been a vegan chef for several years and runs the blog Ordinary Vegan.
Exercise & Fitness
A variety of classes are offered several times a day, so you can maintain your active lifestyle while on the sea. Want to push your exercise regime to the next level? Build your strength with two-time natural bodybuilding champion Robert Cheeke, or take a class with Matt Frazier, a vegan runner who founded the popular blog No Meat Athlete. Enjoy working out to a beat? Check out a cardio dance class with Marcella Torres of the Vegan Muscle and Fitness blog. The other half of Vegan Muscle and Fitness, Derek Tresize, will also be lead engaging fitness classes. For those with specific needs, Larry Krug instructs a class for baby boomers, and Bianka Steinfeldt teaches Pilates for the lower back, as well as beginner and intermediate classes. Also, the gym (Aurea Fitness Center), which is located within the Aurea Spa on deck 14, is free of charge.
