People are skeptical about the health benefits of a vegan diet, particularly the whether or not one can maintain on an entirely plant-based diet. To answer this, we've put together a list consisting of a world-class vegan athletes from varies disciplines who are able to maintain a steady vegan diet while excelling at their respective sports.
Muscle-Building Vegan Athletes
Professional WWE Wrestler Daniel Bryan has been competing worldwide since 1999 standing up against the likes of John Cena and William Regal. Thought modestly-sized for wresting standards, Bryan far exceeds what would be considered the typical size for a male his height and age. UFC Champ Mac Danzig did a vegetarian PSA for the group PETA, later announcing that while believed in animal rights. Vegan Heavy-weight boxing champion Peter Hussing received a bronze medal in the 1972 and 1982 Olympic Games.
Vegan Athletes with Amazing Coordination
Mixed Martial Artists Luke Cummo is trained in kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, participating in his first professional bout at Ring of Combat I. He later competed in ROC 3, 4, 5, and 6, scoring wins by KO, TKO, and submission. Some may recognize Luke from a 2005 appearance in season two of The Ultimate Fighter. Major League Baseball Player Pat Neshek in 2007 was 7-2 with a 2.94 ERA and emerged as the Minnesota Twins’ most reliable setup man in front of closer Joe Nathan. Professional skateboarder Ed Templeton was encouraged by fellow Pro Skateboarder Mike Vallely and Photographer Christian Kline to become vegetarian. He became vegan in 1990 expressing frustration in factory farming and the health implications of eating meat as his reasons for the change.
Though retired, Boxer Mike Tyson has recently gone to the vegan diet, slimming down in the process, while also spending hours in the gym to build up his strength. His reasoning was to remove “drama” from his life and become a better person through the vegan diet’s benefits.
