The Vegan Lifestyle

Many types of people from many walks of life choose the vegan lifestyle. It is a choice to avoid everything made with animal products. Are you suffering from chronic health issues? Are you looking for a way to feel healthier and stronger? Have you studied and know the truth about businesses like commercial leather producers, factory farms, and other industries founded on the use of animals? Do you want to make a difference? If so, then you may want to explore the vegan lifestyle and the benefits and peace of mind it can offer. Many people think being vegan is strict and limiting, but this is a matter of perspective. There are many important physical and philosophical reasons to adopt a vegan lifestyle.

The Origins of the Modern Vegan Lifestyle

In the 1940’s the term vegan was created Donald Watson, one of the founders of the British Vegan Society, and defined simply as vegetarianism without dairy. By the 1950’s the vegan lifestyle also included the principle that humans should be able to exist without the exploitation of animals. In the 1920’s, 30’s, and 40’s the Vegetarian Society debated whether vegetarians should eat dairy and eggs. In The Vegetarian Messenger newsletter, member, Leslie Cross shared concerns that the treatment of dairy cattle and other animals was questionable. Cross went on to start the Plant Milk Society, a.k.a. Plamil Foods, which introduced soy milk to the Western World in 1965.

The Difference Between a Vegan Diet and Lifestyle

The Vegan lifestyle is attractive to a wide variety of people based on their individual motivations. Some people choose a vegan lifestyle because of personal convictions and some for dietary reasons. People engaged in the Vegan lifestyle to improve health simple avoid consuming food made with animal products. This includes poultry, eggs, milk products, honey, beef, pork, lard, venison, and any other animal that is raised or hunted for food. Typically people that choose veganism for health reasons have embraced the vegan diet, rather than the vegan lifestyle.

The vegan lifestyle centers around more than just food consumption. It also focuses on specific beliefs and philosophies. In simplest terms veganism is rooted in the idea of “doing no harm”. Living by the ethics of a vegan lifestyle means you no longer financially contribute to factory farming, which has been proven to cause many environmental hazards. It means you agree to no longer purchase fur, leather, wool, silk, feathers, and other items where animals are kept out of their natural surroundings and forced to be part of the mass production of goods. It means you consider all life sacred and choose to harm none. Living today’s modern vegan lifestyle can even mean avoiding petroleum-based products because of the negative impact on the environment.
