Vegetarian Health: Tips for Maintaining Vegetarian Health

Maintaining optimal health and nutritional balance is essential for everyone and even more essential when a person is eating a vegetarian diet. For many vegetarians it is easy to get in the habit of eating the same carbohydrates and meat substitutes or dairy on a regular basis. This sometimes creates a nutritional imbalance where the body is lacking in particular vitamins and minerals. There are five basic tips you can follow in order to maintain vegetarian health.

Vegetarian Health Tip 1. Talk to Medical Professional

Check with your doctor and evaluate your nutrition regularly, especially if you are a recent meat eater. Just like dogs and cats need to make a slow transition when you change their food or eating habits, so do people. Humans are not that different from other mammals, when they have been eating the same kind of diet for years, drastically changing the food intake is a process. It doesn’t happen overnight. Your doctor or health practitioner can help by diagnosing any deficiencies.

Vegetarian Health Tip 2. Plan Your Meals

Maintaining vegetarian health means you have to plan ahead for meals. Don’t wait until the last minute and let yourself eat low quality or junk food instead of a balanced healthy meal. Making vegetarian health habits a priority can be more easily supported if meals are planned, made in advance and incorporate a mixture of vegetarian food groups.

Vegetarian Health Tip 3. Take Dietary Supplements

Once you have visited with a physician or health expert you will know what vitamins, minerals or herbs you may need to supplement in order to keep your body nutritionally balanced. Since each person is a unique individual with a unique body, it is important to know what your body lacks and where supplements can help. Calcium, protein and iron levels are common things any vegetarian needs to track.

Vegetarian Health Tip 4. Avoid Junk Food

Any food that contains high levels of preservatives or sugar is unhealthy, whether they are vegetarian or not. Just because someone is vegetarian or vegan does not mean they eat healthy foods. Junk food can tempt anyone, it is just the kind of junk food that changes. Eating processed foods lowers the nutritional quality of your food. Whole grains, sugar alternatives like honey or stevia, raw fruits and vegetables, and lots of water will increase your overall health.

Vegetarian Health Tip 5. Maintain a Balanced Diet – Don’t Overeat Carbs

The Mayo Clinic website states “The key to a healthy vegetarian diet — like any diet — is to enjoy a variety of foods. No single food can provide all the nutrients your body needs.” Many vegetarians, especially new vegetarians, tend to rely heavily on grains and carbohydrates. Even when eating whole foods an inflated level of carbohydrates is not a balanced approach to eating. Make sure your diet is balanced and includes the following food categories recommended by the Mayo Clinic: fats, fruits, vegetables, legumes/nuts/protein-rich foods, and grains. In general you should be eating twice as many grains, legumes and vegetables as you are fats and fruits.
